This set has yielded extremely accurate groups using neck sizing with new brass. The neck diameter seems perfect for my bolt gun. I have not checked run out for the seating die but group sizes say it must be spot on. I am not shooting competition but these dies should be good for most anything but true benchrest.

So everyone that’s upset that the dies didn’t come with bushings didn’t read the listing and is not as savvy as they think they are if they don’t know about bushing dies, all the reviews of people complaining about neck tension issues are not very smart! They’re bushing dies! You need the correct bushings! They don’t come with them because everyone needs are different for neck tension. If you have a sammi spec chamber you don’t really need bushing dies you can use standard dies and they’re simpler for people new to reloading.

I originally ordered an expensive Redding die but it left a ring around the bullet, especially on compressed loads, because of the wrong angle on the die insert. After switching to the Hornady with multiple inserts available, that problem no longer exist.

These dies are great and so is the price. Keep in mind these are bushing dies which means you will need to buy bushings to get your correct neck tension. this can be done by measuring a loaded bullet at the neck and subtracting .300 of an inch for a good starting point.

If the dies for the other calibers that I reload produce as consistent a product as this die set, I think that I may be making a change from ‘ R**S in the near future. Right off the blockes I was shooting sub MOA and it only improved from there.

I’m pleasantly surprised by the quality of these dies. Flawless machining. They appear to match the quality of Redding bushing / micrometer dies at a fraction of the price. I appreciate that Hornady includes a few extra decapping pins, a VLD and regular seating stem, and a nice tapered expander (for those that want to use it). The only things missing are the bushing and shellholder.
The included decapping pins are for regular brass and they are too large for Lapua brass with the smaller .059″ flash holes. FWIW – Redding will send you a free set of small diameter pins while Hornady wants to sell them to you…oh well. A few minutes with the decapping pin in a drill against sandpaper and I had it ground down to fit.
I loaded up a few rounds with Lapua 123gr Scenar bullets and factory fresh Lapua 6.5 Creedmoor small rifle primer brass. Runout at the ogive was .001″-.002″. After playing with both seating stems, I was seating bullets to +/1 .001″. This is phenomenal!
Trick: The seating stems are not marked. Take a non-VLD bullet and spin it in the stem by hand a few times. This will create some marks on the bullet surface. The stem that produces marks closer to the tip of the bullet is the VLD stem. The other is for regular bullets.
